Thought:

I believe one of the best things you can do for your training is to invent some benchmark workouts for yourself. These workouts should be challenging, repeatable, indicative, and FUN!

History

This block of workouts happened pretty much by chance, but toasted us enough to try it year after year. A few of us, led by Chuck Dumke, did the above weekend in 1999. I was coaching a Master's swim class and we'd do the swim workout as our semester grand finale. Meanwhile Chuck, in the next room, was leading two 1-and-a-half hour spin classes. After our respective classes, others joined us in the parking lot and we headed out for the Baraboo Hills for a 100-mile ride.

The Madison Marathon was the following day and a few of us did it.

In 2000, a group of us were training together for Ironman USA (Lake Placid) and we repeated the workout -- thus a tradition was born! Over the years, the Sunday run became a valuable benchmark for early season fitness, especially being a good indicator of our ability to run on tired legs (from the previous day.)

In the ensuing years we've had as many as 25 riders on the ride!
