This
block of workouts happened pretty much by chance, but
toasted us enough to try it year after year. A few of
us, led by Chuck Dumke, did the above weekend in 1999.
I was coaching a Master's swim class and we'd do the
swim workout as our semester grand finale. Meanwhile
Chuck, in the next room, was leading two 1-and-a-half
hour spin classes. After our respective classes, others
joined us in the parking lot and we headed out for the
Baraboo Hills for a 100-mile ride.
The
Madison Marathon was the following day and a few of
us did it.
In 2000, a group of us were training together for Ironman
USA (Lake Placid) and we repeated the workout -- thus
a tradition was born! Over the years, the Sunday run
became a valuable benchmark for early season fitness,
especially being a good indicator of our ability to
run on tired legs (from the previous day.)
In the ensuing years we've had as many as 25 riders
on the ride!
