Epic Workout #3 June 10, 2007

Tour of 4 Lakes
Swim, run, swim, run, swim, run, . . .

Madison, for those who don't know, sits between 2 of a 4 link chain of lakes. (see map below)

Participants will run between the lakes and will be responsible for carrying with them the comfort items they choose, i.e. running shoes, goggles, wetsuit, eye glasses, food, etc.

We have been trying to do this workout for 4 years, but the lake conditions have not been acceptable until last year. You see, with respect to these lakes there is about a 2-3 week window in May and June in which the following occur simultaneously:

  • water is warm enough to swim in, but yet
  • water is cool enough that weeds/algae have not overtaken it.

We have chosen Sunday, June 10th. We will start at 7am in the southernmost lake, at Lake Kegonsa Park. We will finish at the Memorial Union Terrace. It works out to be about 4 miles of swimming and 15 miles of running. Details here.

Pretty much anyone is welcome to join us but you should be a very competent swimmer to do so. And you should be comfortable swimming after running significant distances. We will not be responsible for your well being during this workout. See disclaimer below.

 

Disclaimer

This is not a race, an event, or anything other than an epic workout, which, like other workouts you do, you are responsible for your own well being. There will be no lifeguards, safety boats -- there won't even be a starting line! The roads will not be closed and you will be running on the shoulders. There are no sag wagons, course marshalls or the like. You may cramp up while swimming and drown. You may trip while running or get hit by a car. These are risks you undertake and as a result cannot and will not hold Steve Patton, or Patton Athletics responsible.
