I have worked with athletes from all levels
of abilities. I have coached Intro Triathlon courses
as well as Advanced Ironman Training courses lasting
9 months. I reckon that I have coached at least 50 people
to their first sprint triathlon and perhaps 25 to their
first Ironman. I have helped some athletes qualify for
Hawaii and others to simply finish the race. In the
90's, I coached, managed, and trained with elite athletes
from across the USA as part of my Team Event Horizon.
Our athletes garnered over 10 World Triathlon Championships
and 3 Ironman Hawaii age-group titles.
My triathlon background is
unique in that I did not learn how to swim until I was
24. I taught myself by reading technical articles, watching
good swimmers and trying to mimic their strokes. After
a year or so, I became a pretty decent swimmer. As for
cycling, I feel my 4 years on a National Championship
rowing team gave me a good base for decent cycling ability.
However, in crew we did zero running so that was a sport
I had to learn as well pretty much from scratch.
In my 10 years of coaching
I've found my strength to be the ability to convey difficult
technical points since I myself had to learn them, by
myself. I am not a "natural" swimmer, biker, or runner
and yet I'd argue that's a plus for what I have to offer.
I know I'm not the best athlete out there, but I'm fairly
confident I've thought through this stuff more than
nearly anyone else. I do have a "day job" which is managing
investments through my other company, Patton Investments.
The kind of work I do is very analytical and I have
an advanced degree in Math/Finance. Consequently, I
tend to be very analytical and precise in my coaching
services as well. I live in Middleton, Wis. just outside
of Madison. Because of my Finance business I am only
looking to work with 6 to 8 athletes in any six month
period. I seek very enthusiastic and (willing to be)
disciplined people. Experience may not be necessary.
